The Maui Fire Department responded to two separate fires Thursday in the Honokohau Valley area. The first fire broke out at approximately 2:43 p.m. When crews got there, they found a 16'x16' single-story residential structure fully engulfed with flames. The home was located approximately a half mile up the valley road from Honoapiilani Highway. The structure had previously been washed from its original location 100 yards upland by flood waters associated with Tropical Storm Olivia. The tenants and nearby neighbors had been removing items from the structure earlier in the day, and had planned to move the home over the weekend. About two hours after they were done removing items, the structure went up in flames. No one was in the home at the time.
