VIDEO: A fire that damaged two Ankeny mobile homes Tuesday originated in the garage and spread to both residences, said Fire Chief Rex Mundt. Four people in each home were able to evacuate without injury. The sound of the burning garage woke people in both homes before their smoke alarms even went off, Mundt said. “The fire gained access and extended through the units quite quickly,” he said. Fire crews were dispatched at 1:58 a.m. Tuesday to fires at 2470 and 2480 Summer Park Drive. The location of the fire made it difficult for crews to fight, Mundt said. The department’s aerial truck had to park on Oralabor Road and extend the aerial platform over power lines to fight the fire. The road was closed to traffic in both directions for part of the morning.“It was a unique situation for our fire department because of the cramped working conditions and the narrow streets,” Mundt said. The initial crew was on the scene within five minutes and additional help was requested from Polk City, Saylor and Bondurant fire departments.
