A house fire in Sioux City's Morningside neighborhood kept firefighters busy Wednesday morning. When crews arrived on the scene of 1405 South Rustin just after eight, firefighters found smoke coming from home. Fire officials believe the fire started in the kitchen, went up to the ceiling, and into the attic. Flames shot through the roof when they cut holes to ventilate it. No one was home with the fire broke out, but there was a cat and a dog inside. Crews were able to save the cat, but the family's dog died in the fire. "It's sad. As we came in this morning, it was one of those things that goes through your mind. You hope it's a quiet shift with the holidays and families gathering to celebrate and be thankful for what we do and you hope it's a slow day, but unfortunately it started eight minutes into our shift we had a working house fire," says Dan Cougill, Sioux City Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief. Fire caused extensive damage to the home and it will have to be repaired before the family can live there again.
