Firefighters say a family cannot stay in their home until repairs are made following a kitchen fire on Thursday. The fire broke out around 11:20 a.m. in the 600 block of South Madison Avenue. No one was injured, but the kitchen was destroyed. There is smoke damage through the rest of the home. Assistant Chief Bill Trout said a resident of the home was cooking and walked away from the stove for a couple minutes. When she came back, flames were already reaching into the air. Trout said people need to watch carefully when they cook. In Thursday’s case it only took a minute or two for the fire to start and spread.
