A Mason City woman found at the scene of a house fire on Tuesday night has died. Firefighters say Nancy Thompson, 64, died Tuesday as a result of the fire at her home in the 1000 block of East State Street. The fire department and police responded to Thompson's single-story white house near East Park about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday. They were summoned by Thompson's family members, who discovered evidence of the blaze and called 911, according to a Mason City Fire Department statement. Mason City Fire Marshal Jayme Medlin said the blaze started when a wall lamp ignited a window covering. Damage was contained to the kitchen. It was out before firefighters got there. "The fire had smothered itself out," Medlin said. Firefighters found Thompson on the bedroom floor. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, but did not survive. Medlin said Thompson died as a result of the fire, but did not have information on her specific cause of death Wednesday night.
