PHOTO: Fire crews in Des Moines responded to a fire in the 400 block of Orchard Avenue early Thursday morning. When firefighters arrived just after 1:30 a.m. they found a home overrun with flames. Just minutes later the fire spread — shooting through the roof. Luckily, no one was injured. Officials tell us this was an abandoned home — and they know that because they were just there a couple days ago. “It’s very hard to get it completely extinguished especially when the structural integrity of the building is in question. Which is in this case the roof and sub is collapsed in areas, is it’s very easy for some fire and for some smoldering embers to stay smoldering and then ignite later,” said Cpt. Tony Merrill with the Des Moines Fire Department. Just Tuesday the house was left in shambles after it went up in flames for the first time. Smoke could be seen from blocks away. Fire officials are now investigating.
