Charles City Fire Chief Eric Whipple said if the river hits near 24 feet, floodwaters would enter the city’s fire station, businesses near the station on South Grand Avenue, Cedar Circle and Park Drive. Areas on the north side of town could be flooded by a creek, he said. Firefighters planned to evacuate their station Thursday night. “If the water rises around your home, evacuate immediately,” Whipple said. “Don’t drive through flooded roadways; that’s the number one killer in floods — people driving through roadways and their vehicle getting swept off the road.” Fearing the worst, Wolfe and her family recruited other family members and friends to help them get started early. Her father, Bill Wolfe, and uncle, Scott Thomas, knew from looking at flood maps that the girls and their mother faced a serious situation.
