A West Burlington home was damaged in a fire yesterday that firefighters say was started by a poorly disposed cigarette. West Burlington firefighters responded to 213 Ramsey Street at 4:10 pm to a report of smoke coming from the home’s doorway. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke throughout the entire first floor of the home. The smoke was traced to a bedroom, where firefighters found a mattress on fire. Firefighters managed to quickly knock down the blaze and very little actual fire damage occured, however the entire home sustained smoke and heat damage. An investigation determined that the fire started with an unextinguished cigarette left on the mattress.
