The Spencer Ambassadors paid a visit to the Spencer Fire Station Tuesday morning to meet new Spencer fire chief John Conyn. Conyn became a U.S. citizen in 1975 after his parents immigrated from Holland. His mother worked as a maid for a large shoe company, and his father was a bread delivery man. It was a trip to the fire station as an 8-year-old child, where he met a fireman who showed him around the station, and helped set the groundwork for his life's work. "I've never not wanted to do what I'm doing," he told the Ambassadors. He joined the Air Force and became a crash rescue man. "There's no greater gift than to help somebody," he said. He lived in Racine, Illinois, for 25 years in various fire fighting roles. He lived there until the opportunity in Spencer arose for him to take over leadership of 22 firefighters and four full-time personnel.
