A fire that broke out in the kitchen of a Morningside house late Thursday morning caused extensive damage and claimed the life of the family's pet dog. The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday at 1632 S. Olive St. Sioux City Fire Rescue Asst. Chief Dan Cougill said the fire was reported when residents of the home returned and found smoke alarms going off inside. The fire started near the stove area in the kitchen, he said, and extended through the walls and up near the attic area, causing extensive damage.
