A small fire Wednesday caused minor damage to the top floor of the Hilton hotel under construction in downtown Des Moines, according to officials from Weitz Co., the project's general contractor. No injuries to workers or serious structural damage to the building was reported, said Phillip Nicolino, a spokesman for Weitz. Welding work caused the fire. Heat from welding caught a patch of insulation on fire and burned a small section of the roof, he said.
