A Fort Dodge house was ravaged by a Thursday evening fire started by children playing with a lighter, according to firefighters. A dog was rescued from the house at 2755 17th Ave. N. No one was hurt. The fire was reported at 5:39 p.m. Firefighters were still on scene more than two hours later, dousing smoldering insulation pulled from the attic. Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said the one-story house sustained severe fire and smoke damage throughout the main floor. He said the flames spread into the attic and firefighters had to tear open the ceilings in the living room, kitchen and a hallway to extinguish them. According to Hergenreter, the fire started when children playing with a lighter in the bathroom lit a candle and some papers. The flames rapidly spread out of control. The children went to a house next door and told the people there that their house was on fire.
