If you asked any of the 300 members of the Des Moines Fire Department about Doug McCauley, all of them would recall a different story, most likely with a smile on their face. On Wednesday, the Des Moines Fire Department, along with family, friends and the community, gathered to remember McCauley, a 29-year veteran fire engineer, during a visitation with his family. “You knew when you worked with Doug because you had a smile on your face,” said Capt. Mark Dooley, a member of the Des Moines Fire Department and the honor guard. Police cars from surrounding agencies gathered at the Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines where the visitation was held. Outside of the funeral home, a red Des Moines fire truck was adorned with black drapes and McCauley's uniform on display.
