Ab Yochum was born in Ottumwa in 1925. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with the Iowa National Guard Maintenance Company, retiring in 1985 as chief warrant officer. But Yochum’s passion was fire. Yochum served on the Ottumwa Fire Department for 29 years, retiring as captain in 1980. He started ABS Fire Equipment in 1967. “He was all about the fire business,” said Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller. Sunday, Yochum passed away at the age of 92.
