A judge has denied the Iowa State Education Association's request for summary judgment in its case against the state for changes made to Iowa's collective bargaining laws earlier this year.
ISEA, which represents 34,000 education professionals across the state, filed the lawsuit in April as a challenge to House File 291, which dramatically weakens the ability of public-sector union workers to collectively bargain for pay and benefits.
At issue is a provision of the law which exempts public safety workers from the law's broadest changes. The suit contends the law creates two classes of workers and violate's the Iowa Constitution, which guarantees equal protection under the law.
