The Camanche Fire Department is hoping to fill out its ranks as it deals with an all-time low in the number of volunteers while at the same time is faced with a projected all-time high in call volume. Camanche Fire Chief Dave Schutte said the Camanche Fire Department this year had responded to almost 600 calls, with a month left in the year. He said they had 518 calls all of last year. The department had 39 people on the fire department roster when Schutte started in 1991 and has been at around 30 members over the past 10 years. He said they are down to 24 volunteers, which includes four or five nurses who run on the ambulance with the fire department. He said they have less than 20 people who are certified in firefighting. The department also has a junior firefighting program, now in its fifth year.
