Burlington city leaders heard annual budget presentations from the Library and Burlington Fire Department at a Thursday work session for the FY19 budget. Fire Chief Matt Trexel says the number of calls fielded by his department has doubled in the last year. “Three years from now… I don’t know where it’s gonna be. We added four-hundred calls last year,” Trexel told city council members. “I think at the end of the SAFER grant we’re gonna be looking at 6,000 calls per year… not the 5200 we have now.” Trexel says the main reason for increased calls is an aging population in Southeast Iowa.
