Fire damaged a Cedar Falls home while the family was away Monday afternoon. Crews with Cedar Falls Fire Rescue were called to a house at 1621 Patterson Lane around 3 p.m. after a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the home. No people were injured, but a pet dog perished in the fire, authorities said. Fire Chief John Bostwick said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen and spread into the ceiling.
