School shootings have generated discussion about gun regulations, metal detectors, bulletproof glass and arming teachers. It’s also brought about a change in school fire alarm policies. “A lot of kids pull the fire alarm for fun,” Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller said Monday. But it was the Florida school shooting that prompted the fire department to suggest removal of pull stations at Ottumwa High School. “The [Iowa] Code does allow that since the building is fully sprinkled,” said Fire Marshal Cory Benge. “The fire alarm still works because there are smoke detectors.” Fire alarms sound throughout the building automatically when detectors sense a fire.
