We are in the middle of Fire Prevention Week and Newton Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik says the single biggest safety source for saving lives and injuries from fires on a daily basis is smoke detectors. But he says they can’t help you or your family if they aren’t installed or working. Wellik says battery operated smoke detectors should always be ready to detect a fire, as long as you install new batteries twice a year. The Newton Fire Department has a Rental Housing Inspection Program to make sure rental property is safe. The Fire Chief says the biggest problem that comes up is smoke detectors that have been taken down, or don’t have batteries.
