The teenage son of a man who died after a Huxley house fire last week has also died from his injuries, local police said. Daniel Van Ersvelde, 17, died Wednesday at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Huxley police were informed of the death Thursday morning by the state fire marshal's office, Sgt. Joe Marchesano said. Officers responded to the blaze at 5:40 a.m. Sunday at the one-story home at 306 Sycamore Blvd. The teen's father, Brett Van Ersvelde, 47, died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines after he was pulled from the residence. The teenager's parents were trying to save him during the fire, but he refused to leave his bedroom and they were trapped, Marchesano has said.
