Sometimes, when Congress sends a six-figure check to the fire department, they don't just want to know what you're doing with it. They want to see what you're doing with it. US Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, arrived at the Ottumwa Fire Department Thursday afternoon. The chief had written a grant for self-contained breathing apparatus. The feds came through with more than $100,000. "How long will one of these last," Loebsack asked Firefighter First Class Andy Ewing. While the OFD brass was available, they had asked Ewing to be the congressman's guide. Ewing is very good, said Chief Miller, when it comes to explaining SCB apparatus. The answer, by the way, was 30 minutes.
