It may seem like all of Idaho is burning out of control midway through July, but wildfire experts say the number of fires throughout the state is not unusual and is on track to match historical averages. A weekend lightning storm caused at least eight large-range fires to ignite throughout all of southern Idaho stretching from south of Boise to Twin Falls County to north of St. Anthony. Human-caused fires have claimed multiple structures in East Idaho and several other structures were threatened by spot brush fires in a handful of Southeast Idaho counties. “I wouldn’t characterize the season as unusual,” said Kelsey Griffee, fire information officer for the Bureau of Land Management. “Though it might be unusual for lightning this early as most of our lightning fires start in August.” Griffee said the fire season in East Idaho starts to pick up in June and dwindles in September.
