After years of discussion, Caldwell has nailed down property for the city’s third fire station, which is intended to help bring down response times in areas that need it most.
The city has applied for a special-use permit through the Planning and Zoning Department for two acres near the Pheasant Run subdivision on the corner of South Kcid Road and Skyway Drive, near the Sky Ranch Business Park in north Caldwell. The city has already closed on the property.
Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas said there is no definite date for when construction would begin or when the new station would open. The goal, however, is to open it within the year with the addition of three new firefighters, Nancolas said.
Fire Chief Mark Wendelsdorf said he hopes they’ll break ground on the station in late spring or early summer of this year. After that, the station is anticipated to open within 12 to 18 months.
The uncertainty in the project’s time frame, Nancolas said, is due to the overarching costs associated with building the station. The city is currently working to find ways to fund it.
