Sauna fire at Elmhurst YMCA causes $200K in damage

A fire that started in the sauna area of a west suburban YMCA caused $200,000 in damages Monday night. Firefighters responded to the YMCA at 211 W. First St. in Elmhurst at 7:31 p.m., according to a statement from the city of Elmhurst. Staff and patrons evacuated the building, and firefighters found the blaze contained to the men’s locker room, according to the city. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. The fire, which originated in the sauna of the men’s locker room, caused smoke damage throughout the building and water damage in the basement, according to officials. Damage is estimated at about $200,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
