The roof of Americas Best Value Inn at 6920 27th St., Moline, caught fire Thursday morning. The Moline Fire Department received a report at 11:10 a.m. of "smoke and a small amount of flames coming from the roof," according to Jim Versluis, Moline Fire Department training officer. Five construction workers sealing the lining on the roof were cutting away pieces of metal when a spark landed in a nearby bucket of glue. The petroleum-based glue immediately ignited and flames quickly spread. "I was surprised the wind would blow the fire so fast," said Victor Diaz, one of the workers. Mr. Diaz said the fire spread about 20 feet. He said he grabbed a fire extinguisher and contained the flames until firefighters arrived at 11:15 a.m.
