The vacant property at 716 Broadway Street is slated to become the future home of the Lincoln Fire Department.
City Council voted on Monday to purchase the four-lot property for $70,000 from the Lincoln Sand & Gravel Company.
The property is located across the alley from the existing firehouse at City Hall and takes up roughly one quarter of the block between Pekin, North McLean, Broadway and Hamilton Streets.
Before the vote, Fire Chief Mark Miller thanked the council for their support. “This is a project to be completed sometime in the future,” he said.
“Right now, I understand that, you know, we’re not going to be able to move forward on construction of a building or anything for quite some time, but at least with the purchase of the lot that’s next to the fire station; the owner’s were looking to sell that, it gives us an opportunity to purchase that at a good price and keep us from getting locked out from that. So, it keeps our options open for some expansion down the road.”
“So, when that point gets [here], we’ll move forward.”
