Kirk Hoots, Rhi Hoots and Allen McClellan each addressed the board during the open session of its Committee of the Whole to ask about the status of their jobs after they said they were taken into the office during the department’s monthly meeting and given the option to resign or be “Just to confirm, I am fired, right?” Kirk Hoots asked.
At one point during the meeting, Fire Chief David Hickox replied to Kirk Hoots’ question that he wasn’t fired at that time, but was told by Village President Harry Jennings not to go back and forth with Hoots during the meeting.
After Hoots’ question, Hickox responded that he gave Kirk Hoots the choice to resign or be terminated. When asked if that meant he was fired, Hickox responded “no.”
“I didn’t fire you that night,” Hickox told him, in open session.
South Jacksonville Treasurer Tiffanee Peters, who also oversees human resource issues, said she has had nothing to do with any current personnel issues within the fire department.
