A structure fire Tuesday at an aging apartment complex at 409 W. Main St. in Carbondale caused heavy damage and is under investigation.
Carbondale Fire Chief Mike Hertz said the fire started on the first floor of the building at about 7:30 a.m., with the call to 911 coming in at about 7:35 a.m.
He said there were no injuries and did not have a headcount of how many people the fire department evacuated. However, he did say they successfully rescued one cat and one lizard from the building.
Hertz said the fire began on the first floor and traveled within the walls all the way to the attic, which he said is part of what took his team so long to put the fire out.
Hertz said he believes the building will be a total loss.
While the fire is under investigation, Hertz said he could not speculate or comment on the cause of the fire or if arson was suspected. He also could not provide an estimate on when the department will be able to provide a report — he said more interviews are needed to complete the investigation and these will determine how long it takes to complete the process.
