Without a part-time mayor job description, members of the city council’s Public Works Committee said it’s hard to set a salary. The committee Tuesday night continued discussion on elected officials’ salaries.
“I vote not to change (them),” said Ward 6 Alderman Jon Cooper.
Salaries are $73,000 for the full-time mayor; treasurer at $43,500, but also with more than $14,000 from the pension board; and $225 a meeting for aldermen.
“We’re not in it for the money,” Cooper said about aldermen. “I will not support any type of increase for it.”
Ward 4 Alderman Mike O’Kane said he would like to see the mayor make closer to $100,000. The mayor oversees several city employees making $100,000 or more, he said.
O’Kane also questioned whether the city can get a competent person with only a $73,000 salary in the future when the salary is lower than other comparable cites.
Ward 2 Alderman Rick Strebing also questioned having a part-time treasurer instead of it being a full-time position.
