The Glen Carbon Fire Protection District broke ground on Tuesday for its new fire station.
In a ceremony at the building site, 199 S. Main St, officials from the fire protection district, Glen Carbon, Madison County and the architectural and construction services team watched on as firefighters and paramedics broke ground for the new facility.
GCFPD Trustee Alan Schaake said discussion and planning for the new station has taken nearly two years.
“I couldn’t be happier standing here making this announcement because it has been a long time coming,” Schaake said. “This is going to be a beautiful building and one that will function and serve those of the Glen Carbon Fire Protection District community. It’s a building that the men and women of our fire department and EMS can be proud of, that the village can be proud of and the citizens of the fire protection district can be proud of.”
Schaake added that he wanted to thank the taxpayers of the fire protection district because without the taxpayers there would be no building or the vital services the district provides to district residents.
Fire Chief Ralph Well said the building is vital for the ever-growing fire protection district.
