The Springfield Fire Department is amping up their skill level, with new medical training.
It's part of a five-year initiative to have advanced emergency medical technicians on every shift.
“In my career, it has been something that has been one of the most positive changes for the fire department and for the citizens,” said Chief Allen Reyne.
Every firefighter is required to have medical skills, but not every firefighter can provide life-saving care.
SFD is working to ensure that’s not the case.
The department is allowing a group of carefully selected firefighters to go through a three-month intermediate medical course.
"Anytime we can provide a higher level of care to our citizens, just it makes things better for everybody,” said Reyne.
