The fire department just got its first new hires in more than five years.
Six new recruits were sworn in Wednesday. It's a win for public safety, and it will put a dent in the city's budget woes.
It's thanks to money from the "SAFER" grant, which helps pay for hiring and training of new firefighters.
The young men raised their right hands and made a promise to serve and protect their city.
"It was just kind of a family tradition I kept going," said Devin Heinrichs.
For him, it's a legacy. "Firefighting has a long history in my family. My dad and brother are both on Danville at the moment, and then my uncle is retired from Danville Fire," said Heinrichs.
For the city, this is a solution.
"They'll be a welcome addition to the fire division, and the manpower situation that's affecting them currently," said public safety director Larry Thomason.
