Chesterton Fire Captain Brandon Smith was promoted to deputy fire chief as his appointment was approved Monday by the Town Council. Smith had also previously served as the interim fire chief from July through October last year until Sean O’Donnell, a former Gary Fire Department fire chief, was permanently appointed Chesterton’s fire chief. During his five months in Chesterton, O’Donnell has changed the department’s leadership structure. Chesterton now has two deputy fire chiefs. Smith will serve as the deputy chief in charge of fire operations. O’Donnell told The Chesterton Tribune that Rudy Jimenez, who had served as a deputy chief, will return to the rank of captain. In January, the Town’s Council followed O’Donnell’s recommendation and created a second deputy fire chief position.
