Several apartments were evacuated on Hager Avenue Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in one of the residences. According to Madison County Fire Chief Marvin Hereford, when firefighters arrived at the scene around 5 p.m., responders could see flames and smoke coming from the second floor of one of the apartments situated in the back right corner of the complex. The fire chief said the fire appeared to begin in the upper story of an apartment, before spilling over into the next door apartment.
