Lexington Firefighters are making a plea to the community after their smoke detectors installation program has come to a screeching halt. "Smoke alarms are the cheapest form of life insurance you can get for your family," said Chief Joe Best. Three out of five deaths across the nation happen in homes without working smoke alarms and Lexington is consistent with that average. "We had six fire fatalities last year in homes without working smoke alarms here in this county," he said. Firefighters are working to bring that number down by installing free smoke alarms in Lexington homes, but they are dependent on donations and grants and they are currently out of money.
