Ann Kirby's father, May Kirby, farmed all his life before becoming an air plane mechanic in the United States Air Force.
It was only natural for Ann, around age 8, to start picking up the basics of being a mechanic as well as learning to work on the farm. Plus, after May retired from the Air Force, he worked as a maintenance supervisor at Bundy Tubing in Winchester, where Ann helped out for about 18 months.
"We do a lot of maintenance at home, so I learned from him," said Ann, who now works several jobs that aren't traditionally held by women. But they can be traced back to how she was raised.
Kirby started working as a bus driver for Madison County schools 13 years ago, and eight years ago, she became a mechanic for those very same buses.
"I never thought I'd be a bus driver, but once I got into it and went through the training, I enjoy it. I really do enjoy it," Kirby said. "It's different every day, because the kids, they're always coming off with different kids and talking to them, I have enjoyed it."
