A Kentucky school district has a new way of trying to keep students safe, all while using something old that would have been thrown out.
Taylorsville Spencer County Fire District is donating its old fire hoses to schools in Spencer County. The hoses are cut into 6-inch to 8-inch sleeves, which can be used to cover door hinges and jam the doors. The doors then can’t open and could keep intruders out.
“It’s material we were just going to throw away, because it’s no longer good to us,” Fire Chief Nathan Nation said. “Regardless of where you are in the country, you have to be prepared.”
More than 3,500 students, faculty and staff make up the Spencer County School District. The sleeves have been distributed to every room in every building.
