The city of Somerset is one of 50 grant recipients from Kentucky Office of Homeland Security (KOHS), receiving $31,000 for the purchase of a heart monitor for Somerset-Pulaski EMS.
Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler said EMS and the city greatly appreciated the grant. "This will be a tremendous benefit for patients," he said. "The heart monitor will be used to save lives."
KOHS announced the list of grant recipients on Wednesday, saying that the 50 grants awarded totaled nearly $2.9 million. The funds are to be used to purchase law enforcement, fire and emergency services equipment to counter threats of terrorism throughout the state, a statement from the office said.
KOHS said the grant process for 2018 was extremely competitive, with the office receiving 269 applications with a total of nearly $17 million requested throughout the state.
