Man dead and 3 people homeless after house fire in Springfield

A man is dead after he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries following a house fire in Springfield Tuesday afternoon. Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News they were called to a fire at 88 Melrose Street at 1:25 p.m. A 69-year-old man was found in the basement of the one-story home, where Leger said the fire is believed to have started. Emergency crews performed CPR on the man before taking him to Baystate Medical Center. Leger said he was in critical condition at the time. A firefighter was also hurt in the fire. He suffered eye injuries and has been treated and released from the hospital. He is expected to be okay.
