Fire consumes vacant house in Worcester

Firefighters battled a fire early Thursday morning that destroyed a vacant house on 9 Hemans St. The house is set well back from the road in a small neighborhood tucked between Grove Street-Gold Star Boulevard and Interstate 290, behind Percy’s TV & Appliance. Flames had spread throughthe building when firefighters arrived just after 4 a.m., according to District Fire Chief Daniel O’Neil. Firefighters were unable to enter the structureand worked from outside the structure. Little was left of the house by the time the blaze was brought under control, 90 minutes later. Chief O’Neil said investigators are attempting to determine the cause of the fire. The house sits well off Hemans Street, on a three-acre lot. It has been vacant for about 20 years, Chief O’Neil said. Chief O’Neil said a demolition order is being requested to remove the remains of the building.
