Firefighters had to call a mayday while fighting a fire Thursday night on Noreast Drive, according to a statement by the Bourne Fire Department.
At 7:03 p.m. Bourne firefighters were dispatched to a possible fire in an oil burner at 37 Noreast Drive in Sagamore Beach, the statement says.
Because crews from the two closest stations were committed to previous emergency calls, the Pocasset engine was the first on the scene and was soon followed by other fire department personnel, the statement says.
The first personnel arrived on scene within four minutes and found light smoke and no obvious fire.
But at 7:33 p.m., the first crew to respond became trapped in the basement due to heavy fire, high temperatures, and no visibility, and had to call a mayday for assistance in exiting the building, according to the statement.
A second alarm assignment was then requested but the crew trapped in the building was able to safely self-evacuate within four minutes and none of them were injured.
