Acting Fire Chief John J. (J.J.) Burke, who has been the spokesman and “face” of the Sandwich Fire Department for many years, was officially promoted to chief last night.
The selectmen voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Chief Burke, who has been a firefighter in Sandwich since 1998. His hiring marks the third high-profile promotion of someone from town employee ranks in the last several months.
“He was an exceptional candidate with a great educational background,” Town Manager George H. (Bud) Dunham said last night. “He has dedicated his life and career to Sandwich and done a great job.”
David J. Sampson, chairman of the selectmen, who also served on the interviewing committee, said Chief Burke stood out among a strong field of candidates.
“He did an amazing job and was, without question, the best candidate,” Mr. Sampson said. “I told him it was a 20-year commitment.”
