Wendell J. McNamara was the face of the town fire department for decades, becoming Wrentham’s first full-time fire chief, a post he held for 28 years. But McNamara was involved in local affairs well beyond the fire department.
Many turned out Monday morning for McNamara’s funeral, which involved a ceremonial procession with firefighters and fire trucks from Ross Funeral Home to the Original Congregational Church that shut down the downtown for a time. His casket was carried on an antique fire engine and the procession passed under a large U.S. flag draped from two extended ladder trucks.
McNamara, a longtime Wrentham resident, died at age 86 March 4.
