A fire that heavily damaged a home on Beach Street in Dennis may have been started by fireplace ash disposed of in a garage. The Dennis fire and police departments responded to a reported fire at 1:14 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 161 Beach Street. When the firefighters arrived they encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the garage of a 2 ½ story colonial style home. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire using multiple hoses stopping it from getting into the rest of the house. There were two vehicles in the garage at the time of the fire, according to a statement from the DFD. Homeowners Nancy Heller and Holly Gewandter, as well as the fire department were notified of the fire by an alarm system in the building. The owners stated they had put ashes from their fireplace in a paper bag.
