Students at the O'Maley Innovation Middle School were temporarily evacuated to the adjacent Dorothy Talbot Rink on Tuesday afternoon. The evacuation followed a confirmed report of smoke in the school building that came more than an hour after fire crews initially responded to a call reporting a power surge and potential lightning strike. Gloucester firefighters responded just before 11:30 a.m. to reports of a potential lightning strikes at O'Maley and at a house at 22 Reservoir Road as the remnants of Tropical Storm Florence brought heavy rain and thunderstorms roaring across Cape Ann. Firefighters found no sign of any fire or other damage at the Reservoir Road home, but those who responded to O'Maley confirmed that the school had been hit with a power surge. After moving the students to the hallway between the rink and the school's main building, fire crews initially considered moving the students into the rink to wait out any concers, but were able to confirm there was no fire.
