Police and Fire Chief Ronald Landry says his decision to lay off one of the town’s two full-time firefighters will not have a detrimental affect on the Fire Department or the safety of town residents and that there will be no change in the way ambulance and emergency medical service is provided. Since the decision to lay off full-time firefighter/EMT Danny Desmarais two weeks ago, Landry said the department has continued to serve the town in “a professional manner.” Landry appeared before the selectmen Monday to address the public’s concerns on how the department will operate with 50 percent less of its full-time manpower. The department only had three full-time members – Landry, Firefighter/EMT Lt. Steven Furno and Desmarais. The rest of the department is made up of approximately 20 on-call firefighters. Landry said the decision to lay-off a full-time firefighter to cut costs in the face of a massive town budget structural deficit was not made lightly.
