A fire Tuesday afternoon caused extensive damage to a house on the Schultz Farm at 49 Sawyer Road.
A person on Ball Hill Road alerted firefighters at about 2:45 p.m. to heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the building. The first fire crews to arrive found a pet dog outside running around. A second dog died in the fire, according to Fire Chief Jeffrey Legendre. Family members were not home at the time of the fire.
When firefighters arrived, there was heavy fire in the second and third floors, and the attic. Lacking a public water supply, firefighters had tankers from several area communities bring water from about a half mile up the road.
The house sustained extensive damage in the top floors. Firefighters from Boxboro, Clinton, Harvard, Lancaster and Stow assisted the Bolton Fire Department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
