A 9-month-old baby girl is alive thanks to the quick actions of a Montgomery County officer, police said.
According to police, Officer James Herman initiated a traffic stop Sunday on the shoulder of northbound I-270 near the Muddy Branch Road exit when another car pulled up. A grandmother and a relative rushed out of the car and ran to Officer Herman with the baby they said was unresponsive. While holding the baby, Herman noticed that she looked ashen and began to perform CPR. The baby soon regained consciousness, according to police.
Officer Herman is a dad himself and he's expecting his second child any day now. He admitted that he panicked for a second, but then his CPR training kicked in.
"You want to grab the baby. Keep her upright, support her head. She sort of fits in your arm. You press gently on the chest," said Officer Herman.
An out-of-state firefighter also stopped to help as Herman radioed dispatch for emergency crews.
"He said, 'I feel a pulse.' And I stopped and looked, and you could see her eyes come back, you could see her become attentive," said Officer Herman.
