City officials and the Washington County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday to discuss the inordinate amount of money Hagerstown spends on its paid fire department and how the county might help soften the blow.
In a joint meeting Tuesday afternoon at City Hall between the Hagerstown City Council, Mayor Bob Bruchey and the commissioners, Councilman Kristin Aleshire outlined how much the city spends on its paid fire department.
Aleshire said he thinks Baltimore is the only city in the state obligated to have paid fire service. Only three other cities in the state besides Hagerstown continue to offer the service, including Cumberland, Annapolis and Salisbury, Aleshire said.
